Mom & I Take Cape Elizabeth
This week our adventure was to a small town outside of Portland, ME called Cape Elizabeth. I'd seen photos of a lighthouse there and knew I wanted to head that way. From my experience, you CAN NOT go wrong visiting Maine. I was planning to go a different day than we went, so this trip seemed a little last minute. I was worried that, because of this, it was going to be messy and chaotic. It turned out the exact opposite.
Maddux was so happy and content on the drive both there and back. He had so much fun playing in the snow. He didn't mind hanging out in the car during our car wash. He didn't even mind the cold near the ocean! It was the type of trip that dreams are made of, and that doesn't happen often. One of the main tricks I have learned to better my odds of things playing out this way is to go during nap time. Being on the road while he is asleep is much more pleasant for him (and for me as well, because I can tune in to a Podcast which is almost like therapy!).
On this drive I really dug in to Oprah's podcast called Supersoul. I am sure you have heard of it at this point, it's all the rage, but for good reason. One in particular that really spoke to me was an interview with Sebastian Junger. He is a veteran and author and they spoke about his most recent book "Tribe". His thoughts about parenting, community, loneliness, communication and the feeling of brotherhood really touched my heart. He talked about the effect of being distracted by technology as a parent and the potential problems it could lead to with a child. He talked about the fact that none of us rely on each other for day to day necessities anymore, and it leads to loneliness and depression. They touched on so many different things that when it was over, I was left wanting to hear more. Take a listen if you haven't already!
We went to the lighthouse and then played by the beach for a while. We took a walk on a small trail while the sun was setting and enjoyed each other's company. It was simple and perfect.
This wonderful day with my son helped me fall in love with motherhood and it's blessings all over again. Adventures are good for the soul, especially during this time of year when those winter blues can sneak in and cause a world of hurt.
