Meekness

Meekness

Hey there!

A few weeks ago I turned 30.

WOW.

For so long that number seemed so far off that it was just a scary thing in the distant future that I would never have to endure. Now I am living it and I realized that I literally was only ONE DAY older than the day before. Just because 30 sounds so daunting doesn't mean I've suddenly transformed in to a rickety-old fogie who plays shuffle board at the country club on the week days. Once the scary factor went away, I got to work on thinking of what I wanted my 30's to be about.

In a recent talk given by David A. Bednar, the word "meekness" struck me as the quality that defines the kind of wife, mother and woman I want to be. After hearing it, I knew that was going to be my focus for my 30's. Many people think of meekness as mild and weak, but he explains,

"Meekness is strong, not weak; active, not passive; courageous, not timid; restrained, not excessive; modest, not self-aggrandizing; and gracious, not brash. A meek person is not easily provoked, pretentious, or overbearing and readily acknowledges the accomplishments of others."

I want my son to look back and describe his mother as all of these things. I want my husband to feel as though I exemplify strength, courage, restraint, grace, and is someone who is not easily provoked. I want people to know me as a woman who supports and builds other up, who is humble and kind and who works hard for what she wants while still being modest. All of these goals are exemplified through this quality.

"Meekness is a defining attribute of the Redeemer and is distinguished by righteous responsiveness, willing submissiveness, and strong self-restraint."

I have been looking for a reason to purchase a necklace from Made By Mary, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. A daily reminder of my goals, and an outward expression of my inward desire to be better.

Here's to being better in my 30's than I was in my 20's.

Ps. I look homeless in it here because I slept in it, but I love this Madewell Tie front Tee. I am also wearing it in this picture from the beach. Click to photo to be linked to it.
